The Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is the largest animal on Earth, reaching up to 33 meters in length and weighing over 170 tonnes. It migrates to the Gulf of California off Carmen Island between January and March annually. Calves are born over 7 meters long and weigh more than 2 tonnes. Blue Whales feed on krill and sardines, filtering water through comb-like plates in their mouths, consuming up to a ton of fish daily. They can live up to 80 years, diving for up to 60 minutes at depths of 100 meters. They are recognized by their narrow, vertical spout reaching about 6 meters high.

In the image, the imposing tail of the Blue Whale emerges among waves off Cabo. These majestic cetaceans are known for their transoceanic migrations, covering incredible distances between different oceanic regions. The tail, in addition to being a propulsion tool, plays a crucial role in the communication and behavioral expression of these marine mammals.
