La Catrina is an iconic figure in Mexican culture, particularly associated with the Dia de los Muertos celebration. It is a skeletal representation, elegant and dressed in classy attire, often accompanied by a wide-brimmed hat. La Catrina has become a popular symbol of the celebrations related to the remembrance of the deceased in Mexico.
This figure was created by the Mexican illustrator and engraver José Guadalupe Posada in the 20th century. Initially called "La Calavera Garbancera," La Catrina became a symbol of social criticism, highlighting the vanity and transience of wealth and beauty.
